Entry #708: LGBT employment discrimination in United Kingdom

Current Version

RegionUnited Kingdom
IssueLGBT employment discrimination
StatusSexual orientation and gender identity
Start DateOct 1, 2010
End Date(none)
DescriptionIn 2010, the rest of the UK's employment discrimination protections were brought up to standard with those of Northern Ireland in the Equality Act of 2010. There are, however, exemptions for certain occupations (such as religious organisations).

The law has also attracted recent criticism in its inability to effectively protect transgender people from discrimination as courts have ruled that "gender-critical" views are protected beliefs under this law.

In 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that transgender women are not protected under the definition of women in the Equality Act. While trans women are still officially protected from discrimination on the basis of gender identity, the ruling effectively states that they are not protected from sexism.

edited by DaisyGeekyTrans. Adding some information. Trans people are still officially protected from gender identity discrimination (not in practice tho) but the ruling does mean that trans women aren't protected from misogyny.
