Description | In mid-June 2024, with little debate or fanfare, Thailand’s Senate passed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage. Thailand’s Senate voted 130-4 to pass the bill that the lower house had approved by an overwhelming majority in March. The Marriage Equality Act makes important amendments to language in Thailand’s Civil and Commercial Code concerning spouses, in particular by changing “men and women” and “husband and wife” to “individuals” and “marriage partners.” Once the law takes effect later this year, the kingdom will become the first country in Southeast Asia, and only the second in Asia after Nepal, where same-sex marriages are recognized. Taiwan, the self-governing, democratically ruled island that China considers a renegade province, also legalized same-sex marriage in 2019. |
