Entry #13040: Right to change legal gender in Sweden

Current Version

RegionSweden
IssueRight to change legal gender
StatusLegal, no restrictions
Start DateJul 1, 2025
End Date(none)
DescriptionStarting July 1, 2025, updating legal gender on official records will become much easier. People 16 and up will be able to switch their legal gender, however anybody that is under the age of 18 will need permission from their parents, a doctor, and the National Board of Health and Welfare. When the law goes into effect, transgender people won't need a diagnosis of "gender dysphoria" anymore in order to legally change their gender.

DescriptionBefore July 1st, 2025, anyone who wanted to have a sex change surgery must have been 18 years old and had to undergo a comprehensive medical examination and receive approval from the National Board of Health and Welfare's legal advice. Now, all that is needed is a statement from a doctor who considers it proven that the person wants to change gender and is perceived as wanting to live in the new gender for a long time to come, as well as an approval from the National Board of Health and Welfare.Starting July 1, 2025, two new rules will kick in: one for surgeries to change gender and another for updating legal gender on official records.
