Issue | Right to change legal gender |

Description | In Trentino Alto Adige, Italy, it is possible for trans individuals to legally change their gender on their official documents. In fact, Trentino Alto Adige is one of the most progressive regions in Italy when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights, and it was the first region in the country to recognize same-sex civil unions in 2016. Trans individuals in Trentino Alto Adige can change their gender on official documents by submitting an application to the court in the place where they live. The application must include a medical certificate stating that the individual has undergone gender reassignment surgery, as well as an expert medical opinion stating that the individual has a stable and long-term gender identity that corresponds to the gender they are seeking to change their documentation to. The court will then make a decision on the application, and if the application is approved, the individual will be able to change their gender on their official documents. It's worth noting, however, that not all Italian regions have such progressive legislation regarding gender identity, and it can be more difficult for trans individuals to change their gender on official documents in other parts of the country. |
