DescriptionThe governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, Reinaldo Azambuja (PSDB), sanctioned a law that prohibits the use of the so-called “neutral language” in the school environment, in official documents and in the production of teaching materials.

Bill 5,820, which gave rise to the law, establishes that it is mandatory to use the standard of the Portuguese language in learning instruments used throughout the school environment “as a way of standardizing the official language of the country”. The proposal, authored by state deputy Marcio Fernandes (MDB) had been approved in the Legislative Assembly by 14 votes to 1. The law is already in force in the state.
Nationwide, expect in some states.
