Reports (1)
  • Status is not correct "Legal but requires medical diagnostic Article 37 of the Civil Status Registry Act (2012) states that the birth register can be supplemented on the basis of a court judgment, a custody court decision, administrative action, a medical certificate or other document confirming "gender reassignment", or personal application. However, the law does not specify what amounts to a "gender reassignment" which, according to a report by the European Commission leaves decision-making bodies free to impose requirements arbitrarily. Neither ILGA-Europe nor TGEU rule out surgeries or other medical interventions as requirements for the change of gender markers. According to articles 134(11) and 137(3) of the Regulations on registers of civil status acts (Regulations No. 761) (2013), a document "certifying the change of gender" issued by a medical institution or practitioner must be submitted. https://database.ilga.org/latvia-lgbti"
