| Description | In January 2013, then-Minister for Women and Equalities Maria Miller introduced the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill to the House of Commons. The bill passed through the Commons by 366 votes to 161 in May 2013, and through the House of Lords by 390 votes to 148 in June 2013. The bill received royal assent from Queen Elizabeth II on 17 July 2013 and became the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, which came into effect on 13 March 2014 and legalised same-sex marriage in England and Wales. |
